Conventional (Vial)
Conventional (or vial) contact lenses are similar to Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) lenses in that they are made from a firmer plastic than soft disposable contacts and are designed to last for a number of years before being replaced. They offer the same advantages are RGPs with the added benefit of generally being designed to last even longer, though this can mean that they also take longer to get used to.
Vial contact lenses can be used to treat a wide variety of prescriptions - more than with the more popular disposable lenses - and are often chosen for their increased clarity and reliability for wearers who suffer from conditions such as astigmatism and presbyopia. Due to their resilient nature and durability, similar to RGPs, conventional contact lenses are also a popular choice for long-lasting coloured lenses.

Convential vial lenses are often prescribed by opticians as the best option for those with more advanced and specialist conditions. As they can be shaped to fit a specific eye and prescription they offer far greater flexibility that mass-produced disposable lenses, and can be expertly polished and reshaped if necessary to ensure long life. Over time conventional lenses often work out far cheaper than disposables despite their initial expense.
Vial lenses require the same careful storage and cleaning as RGPs and weekly or monthly disposables, and they have the same added benefit as RGPs in that they do not absorb proteins and lipids as easily so are less likely to cause these sorts of irritations and even infections. However careful cleaning is essential to ensure that other debris and deposits are properly removed every night.
Due to their specialist nature, conventional vial contact lenses are generally recommended for particular wearers rather than for general use. However, if you think you may be better off with conventional lenses then do consult your optician to discuss your options, although vial lenses are not recommended for first-time wearers due to the time taken to get used to them.
